Audiobook review: The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss, narrated by Rubert Degas
A 70 hour prologue
How about a six books series instead?
So far we have two books, distilled into more than 70 hours of narration by Rubert Degas – and I feel like the story is only getting started. As far as I know it's supposed to be a 3 book series, but I think Patrick Rothfuss has a tendency to loose himself in a part of the story and spend a little too long exploring particular story arcs, which brings us to about the end of the beginning of the story, in the last hours of book 2 The Wise Man's Fear. A couple of times during the two books, starting somewhere in the first part of book 2, it's like Rothfuss had a "Damn, I need to get this moving along..."-thought, and then propelled the storyline to a new arc within a few chapters. How he is going to finish this is in only one book, I have no idea – I hope he doesn't rush it. I could easily binge through another 100 hours.
But I can't blame him, it's a wonderful universe with a lot of interesting characters and concepts to explore, told in a mesmerizing narrative by the lead character of the books. Supposedly the Kingkiller. I believe his name is Kvothe, but having only heard the audiobooks I'm not sure about the spelling. Actually I don't think I could spell a single name from the book. But that's one of the great things about a good voice actor, you don't need to remember the characters names, when they all have a very distinct voice.
You should give it a listen if you're into fantasy, and feel like escaping into a large and wonderful universe.
