Think about it

If mermaids were real. Or meremen, mermaids, mer-humanoid type aquatic abes or whatever you want to call them. If they were real, it would likely have no actual effect on your life. It's not like you'll wonder about where they are, the next time you go for a swim in the deep-sea pacific ocean. Mostly because you would never go for a swim there. But if mermaids existed – you'd likely never see one.

Just decide to believe in mermaids

"What a wonderful world this is. Elephants, birds of paradise, rainbows and mermaids." If you believed in mermaids, that might be you I just quoted. It makes the world a more wonderful place without impacting your life - win/win. But it might have an effect on whether or not you dumb that toxic waste into the ocean.

Birds are cute. Fish and dolphins are cute too. But for some reason, humanoid animals seem to get a bigger emotional response when they're being mistreated or covered in oil. And although some people might be hunting and eating whales – no one hunts and eats orangutangs (as far as I know).

Believe in mermaids to save the world

Well, maybe. But it might be a great reason to start believing in mermaids. If you're into that sort of thing. Personally, I just like the idea of happy little mermaids swimming around playing with dolphins and playing music on shells. It's certainly a world more interesting to live in.

There was a documentary about it, I can't remember who made it or what it was called. But they "documented" the existence of aquatic abes. It was completely staged and badly acted, but I was still left with the thought of "sure, it'd be awesome with aquatic abes – who cares about the evidence". A world with mermaids would be awesome. And a world believing in mermaids might be a little more respectful of the oceans. Food for thought I guess.
